I’ve come to the alarming realization that I’m privileged. I say “alarming” because the privileged, like the scribe in this Sunday’s gospel reading, often don’t fare well with Jesus. It’s not just being privileged, it’s that being privileged is often at the expense of others. In this case it’s the poor widow whose resources are eaten up to pay her temple offering. We can’t help it if we live in the belly of the beast. But we can practice, and I do mean practice, faithful stewardship of our privilege.
