Well, Jesus didn’t crash the wedding. Apparently he and his mom were invited guests that day in Cana. When the wine ran out Mary pulled Jesus’ aside to lament the social disaster unfolding before their eyes. Jesus rose to the occasion (so to speak – it did happen “on the third day”) by turning water into wine, the first of Jesus’ signs in the gospel of John. Really? A wine run was Jesus’ first sign?? What Jesus crashed that day was the old ideas about how life works. Jesus took old ritual jars and re-purposed them for something new and good. God takes the old pieces of life and makes something new and good. And who couldn’t use something new and good about now?
