In Farewell to Arms Earnest Hemingway observes, “The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places.” The Apostle Paul writes, “Whenever I am weak, then I am strong.” Nobody wants to be broken, weak, or incomplete. But we all are in one way or another. The disciples want to be fully informed about the next steps in Jesus’ plan to make Israel great again. It’s not theirs to know, he explains, but does promise power through the Holy Spirit. Rather than waiting for completeness we may never have, God promises the power to proceed with the Spirit we do have.
