The Fifth Wednesday Movies and Meaning selection for this outing is Mary Poppins Returns. We’ll meet for the 6:10 pm showing at the Regal Evergreen Parkway Stadium 13 at 2625 N.W. 188th, Hillsboro, OR 97124. If you need directions (or want to confirm you’re headed to the correct location) try this link: https://www.fandango.com/maps/DrivingDirections.aspx?tid=AAAQM.
The movie is a little over two hours long which should provide a little time for those who would like to gather afterwards for conversation. We can choose the optimum location at the movie.
Though this is a lighter choice, the movie is no less meaning-ful than some more substantial film. We’ll have fun with it! And we’ll also ask some of the usual questions: What speaks to us, how and why? What story is being told and why does it matter? Can we catch a glmpse of the holy in it? Why this movie now?
As you might know the Mary Poppins stories are the work of author P. L. Travers whose depiction of the maybe magical nanny is somewhat darker than the original Disney presentation. Mary Poppins Returns shades her just a tad more that way. Does it make a difference? Why or why not?

And for extra credit look up “deus ex machina” and reflect on Manohla Dargis’ description of the Poppins character as a “secular savior.”
See you at the movies!
