They say that if you encounter a cougar on the trail you’re supposed to make yourself big. It’s probably good advice in that rare situation. Unfortunately some of us make ourselves big all the time, sometimes at others’ expense. Big money, big business, big guns, big power. We get used to thinking that’s the way it’s supposed to be. Then comes along the lowly servant, Mary, and her not-quite-husband Joseph, and tiny Jesus born in insignificant Bethlehem in one of the little clans of Judah. Little clans and lowly servants. Yet from those small packages come good things: the lowly lifted up, the hungry filled with good things, help and mercy. The world tilted a little more toward heaven and our get-big strategy tilted on its head. Truth be told most of us are small packages, too. And yet we’re each God’s gift to the world.
But if you encounter a cougar on the trail, make yourself big.
Worship at the Reedville Church is at 9:30 am this Sunday and every Sunday. We’re a small package, and a good thing.
